XsimReviews : To view or not to view… That is my X Question.

Chris (Serio) has noted in the X-Plane Dev blog of the details if the 3d view feature coming in 10.10b5. The Views – Updates to a very important system

Called “Quick-Look” or QL

It was to be included in the original 10.10beta up-date but I think it was wisely kept till it is refined and sorted, but it will be certainly in the next release.

There is a sort of beta version in there now, but if you rush from this page to use it and set it up it will be a waste of time as everything will be overwritten when you download the next update.

Certainly a very welcome addition to our universe, I have used the izicam plug-in for years and it has been a good soldier for me, but it is restricted to only 4 moveable views and 4 set views which restrict it a fair bit – in the new Laminar default version you will get 10 views and all moveable.

Certainly a godsend around the 3d VC cabin, but more for me it is valuable for opening doors in the rear, at the moment you have to scroll sideways or backwards very slowly till you find the handle to click open the door, It can take minutes (or Hours) to find the door(s) on Javier’s default B747-800 just to open it.

But sometimes you need a QL view to set a freq or get to a switch quickly, if you get the Frame-rate stutters pretty badly and you need that certain lever or switch then the frustration level can rise pretty quickly. Most payware products do include views, but from now on they will also have the option of including a set of  QL “views” with their products.

How do you use it, as Chris explains :

“Currently, you get 10 QL views per aircraft and they’re saved/recalled anytime you switch aircraft. The QL keys are number-pad 0-9 by default. So for example, to recall QL3, just press the 3 on your number pad. To save a view to QL3, just get the view the way you like it, then press CONTROL + Num-pad 3. CONTROL is the default modifier key to do memorization. Like most of the commands in X-Plane, these are customizable so you can wire them up to any button combinations that you want. Also, you can use your joystick buttons as well to recall saved views.”

Which is pretty well like the izicam really, but i don’t have to set it in my plug-ins for assigned keys every time I want to fly.

Also it is Aircraft assigned, so when you change aircraft the same settings won’t be in there.

The “mouse look” in 3D mode has also been removed as it wasn’t being used much, I never used it so I won’t be missing it.

Another change is to the Right “Click” and move your mouse to adjust the camera angle”, As Chris notes:

I’ve gone in and made things more consistent. Now, no matter what view you’re in, if head movement or zoom is possible, it’s done with right click and scroll. It used to require a LEFT click and scrolling was not an option. This should immediately help people who had trouble with the left clicks activating their mouse-flying box.

For most of my flying I have set my keyboard up as I really like it (As I hate two keys for an action) , but I guess I am now going to run out of keys, I also found on the 10.10beta update that my key preferences were wiped, and took me an whole hour to put everything back….  and now I have ten more?

When the 10.10b5 update is running I will give you the verdict, but from here it looks like a winner.
